Important note: StreetSmart™ provides educational and coaching insights. It does not diagnose medical or psychological conditions and is not a substitute for professional clinical assessment.
StreetSmart™ is a cognitive testing platform that helps identify learning strengths, potential risk factors, and coaching priorities before in-vehicle training begins. It’s designed to give instructors, schools, and families a structured, evidence-informed view of how a student is likely to learn and respond in the driving environment.
What StreetSmart™ Measures
StreetSmart™ uses a short, structured battery of digital tasks to build a profile of key cognitive and behavioural factors related to driver training.
Attention and Focus
- Ability to sustain focus over repetitive or low-stimulation tasks
- Susceptibility to distraction and lapses in attention
Reaction Time & Processing Speed
- How quickly a learner responds to changing stimuli
- Speed/accuracy balance under mild time pressure
Working Memory & Task-Switching
- Holding and updating information (e.g., directions, rules) in mind
- Flexibility in shifting between tasks or rules without losing track
Risk Perception & Impulsivity Indicators
- Sensitivity to potential hazards in a visual scene
- Tendency to act quickly vs. pause and evaluate
- Preference for “safe” vs. “risky” choices in structured scenarios
Learning Style & Preferred Feedback Types
- Responsiveness to visual, verbal, and step-by-step guidance
- Preference for immediate vs. delayed feedback
- Indicators of whether learners benefit more from repetition, demonstration, or independent practice
The result is a concise profile that helps everyone involved in training understand how a student is likely to learn best on the road.
Why It Matters
Not all students learn the same way. Two learners can study the same handbook and take the same lessons, yet have very different needs when they get behind the wheel.
StreetSmart™ helps instructors:
- Adjust their coaching approach
- Tailor explanations, pace, and repetition to the learner’s cognitive profile
- Decide when to introduce more complex driving environments
- Identify students who may need extra support
- Early indicators that a student may require more time, structure, or supervision
- A starting point for conversations with parents/guardians about expectations
- Plan practice sessions strategically
- Match routes and skill focus to specific strengths and weaknesses
- Use insights (e.g., slower processing speed, higher impulsivity) to guide where additional practice or safeguards may be helpful
The goal is not to “pass or fail” students, but to enable more individualized, safer, and more effective driver training.
How It Works
StreetSmart™ is delivered as a pre-driving digital assessment that can be completed anywhere – at home, in a classroom, or at a driving school office.
- Pre-Driving Digital Assessment
- Conducted on a mobile phone, tablet or desktop/laptop
- Designed to be accessible and intuitive, even for test-averse learners
- Short Test Battery
- Total duration: approximately 20-30 minutes (configurable by program)
- Includes a series of brief, game-like tasks that each measure a specific construct (e.g., attention, working memory, response speed)
- Automated Reporting
After completion, StreetSmart™ generates two complementary reports:- Student & Parent Summary
- Plain-language explanation of key strengths and focus areas
- Suggested study habits and practice guidelines
- Emphasis on support, not judgment
- Instructor-Facing Coaching Recommendations
- More detailed indicators related to in-class and in-vehicle training
- Guidance on pace, complexity of environments, and communication style
- Suggested checkpoints to revisit as training progresses
- Student & Parent Summary
StreetSmart™ is designed to fit naturally into your onboarding workflow, adding meaningful insights without adding heavy administrative burden.
Data Ethics & Privacy
StreetSmart™ is built with data protection and ethical use at its core.
What’s Collected
- Assessment performance data (e.g., response times, accuracy on tasks)
- Basic demographic or program data as configured by your organization (e.g., age group, program type)
- Account details needed to deliver and manage reports
How Data Is Stored & Protected
- Encrypted in transit and at rest
- Stored on secure, access-controlled infrastructure
- Access restricted to authorized users (e.g., designated instructors, program admins)
How Data Is Used – and Not Used
- Used for:
- Generating individual learner reports and coaching recommendations
- Aggregated, de-identified analysis to improve the StreetSmart™ platform and training programs
- Not used for:
- Marketing to learners or families based on assessment results
- Making high-stakes decisions in isolation (e.g., refusal of training)
- Any clinical diagnosis or labeling of medical/mental health conditions
Privacy & Compliance
StreetSmart™ is designed to support compliance with relevant privacy legislation in the regions where it is deployed (e.g., youth privacy, education, and data-protection regulations). Program implementations can be configured to meet local legal and policy requirements, including consent processes and data retention policies.
Your organization retains control over how long learner data is kept and who can access it.
Use Cases
StreetSmart™ is flexible enough to support a range of programs and research contexts.
Driving Schools Onboarding New Students
- Incorporate StreetSmart™ into registration or first lesson
- Give instructors a head start before the first in-vehicle session
- Provide parents with a structured way to understand and support their learner
Specialty Programs
- Anxiety-focused programs: Identify learners who may benefit from slower progression, more repetition, or specific coping strategies
- Seniors’ licensing or refresher programs: Gain insight into processing speed, attention, and task-switching to inform training and recommendations
- Commercial / Professional Licensing: Add a cognitive/behavioural layer to existing screening and training workflows
Research on Driver Behaviour
- Use standardized cognitive measures alongside simulator or on-road outcomes
- Explore relationships between cognitive profiles and training outcomes, incident rates, or test performance
- Support evidence-informed improvements to curricula and safety interventions
