Research & Insights Hub

What We’re Learning About Drivers

Every year, thousands of new drivers move through training programs, structured practice, assessments, and real-world driving. YD Labs and Research Inc. turns those experiences—combined with cognitive insights, telematics, behavioural studies, and instructor feedback – into evidence that shapes safer and more effective learning.

The Research & Insights Hub is where we share emerging data, flagship reports, and practical takeaways for parents, instructors, fleets, and policymakers.

Featured Research Themes

The Practice Gap

Time spent vs. the quality and variety of practice.

Many learners enter their road test under-practiced—not in hours, but in exposure. We examine:

  • How much practice students actually log
  • Which environments matter most (routes, complexity, night driving, weather)
  • Why quality is often more important than total hours
  • How structured plans close the gap more effectively than unplanned driving

Anxiety & Confidence

What reduces fear behind the wheel—and what makes it worse.

Our research tracks:

  • Cognitive and behavioural factors that predict anxiety
  • How instructor communication styles influence confidence
  • The impact of early wins and progressive challenges
  • Digital tools and coaching methods that reduce overwhelm

Teen Drivers

Attention, distraction, and decision-making during early development.

With adolescents, the core risks often relate to cognitive maturity:

  • Working memory limitations under stress
  • Susceptibility to distraction (device, peers, multitasking)
  • Developmental patterns in judgment and impulsivity
  • How training environments can reduce these risks

Winter & Hazardous Conditions

The gap between skill and perception.

Can new drivers accurately judge traction, visibility, and stopping distance? We study:

  • How learners perceive risk vs. actual hazard
  • Where confidence mismatches ability (overconfidence or underconfidence)
  • How training modules improve outcomes in snow, ice, and rain

Telemetry & Performance

What vehicle data reveals about learning behaviour.

Using anonymous telematics inputs, we examine:

  • Braking smoothness and braking-reaction patterns
  • Speed control and speed drift in changing environments
  • Cornering lines and steering consistency
  • How performance evolves over a learner’s first 10, 20, or 50 hours

These patterns help quantify improvement—and highlight where coaching interventions have the biggest impact.

Content Types

Flagship Reports

Deep, data-driven research papers synthesizing large learner cohorts, instructor feedback, and telematics analysis.

Example titles:

  • “Closing the Practice Gap: Insights from Young Drivers.”
Identifying the most important hours of practice—and where learners fall short.
  • “Cognitive Profiles of New Drivers: What Instructors Should Know.” [underway]
Exploring attention, memory, and risk perception patterns in the learner population.

These reports help shape policies, training programs, and new curriculum design across North America.

Infographics & Data Stories

Visual summaries that bring research to life.

  • Heatmaps of common practice routes
  • Time-of-day driving distribution
  • Hazard detection patterns
  • Weather-condition performance curves
  • Provincial/state comparisons of pre-test preparation

Ideal for presentations, classrooms, and public education campaigns.

Webinars, Replays & Training Videos

  • Instructor professional development sessions
  • Road-safety briefings for schools and community partners
  • Research presentations for policymakers
  • Partner updates showcasing new findings from telematics, StreetSmart™ or DriversCoach™

These sessions help bridge the gap between research and on-the-road learning.
