YD Labs and Research Inc. — Privacy Policy

Effective Date: November 28 2025
Last Updated: November 28 2025

YD Labs and Research Inc. (“YDLR”, “we”, “our”, or “us”) is committed to protecting the privacy of all users of the StreetSmart Cognitive Assessment Platform, the DriversCoach mobile application, and all supporting systems, services, and research tools.

This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, store, and protect your personal information in compliance with the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) and all applicable provincial privacy laws in Canada (including Alberta’s PIPA, B.C.’s PIPA, and Quebec’s Law 25 where applicable).

By using our websites, apps, or services, you consent to the practices described in this Privacy Policy.

1. Overview

YDLR operates two major systems:

  1. StreetSmart — a cognitive-skills assessment platform used for driver readiness, hazard perception, visual scanning, and reaction-time testing.
  2. DriversCoach — a telematics-enabled driving-practice companion app that provides feedback, micro-learning, sensor-based performance analytics, and route guidance.

Both platforms collect different types of information depending on use-case.
We aim to collect only the minimum data required to provide accurate assessments, safety insights, and app functionality.

We do not sell personal data.
We do not use data for third-party targeted advertising.
We do not permit unauthorized third-party access.

2. Personal Information We Collect

2.1 Account Information

When you register for StreetSmart, DriversCoach, or any YDLR service:

  • Name
  • Email address
  • Password (hashed & salted)
  • Province/territory (for licensing rules & content alignment)
  • Optional profile details (age range, learner stage, school or franchise association)

2.2 Device & Technical Information

Automatically collected for app stability and performance:

  • Device model and operating system
  • IP address
  • App version and crash logs
  • Device orientation information (e.g., gyroscope or accelerometer readings used in StreetSmart reaction tests)

2.3 StreetSmart Cognitive Assessment Data

StreetSmart evaluations require the processing of:

  • Reaction times
  • Response accuracy
  • Visual search metrics
  • Touch or click interactions
  • Time-to-detect hazard cues
  • Cognitive pattern metrics used to generate aggregate scoring

No biometric identifiers (e.g., facial recognition) are collected.

3. Telematics & Sensor Data Collected in DriversCoach

DriversCoach uses your smartphone’s motion sensors, GPS, and heading/orientation data to detect and classify driving behaviours.
These data are processed locally on-device and, depending on your settings, may also be synced securely to YDLR servers for progress tracking.

The following telematics signals are collected and processed:

3.1 Device Motion Data

From the iOS/Android motion frameworks used in your code, including:

  • Linear acceleration (X/Y/Z)
  • Rotation rate (gyroscope) in world frame
  • Forward acceleration, lateral acceleration, horizontal acceleration (derived and filtered)
    • e.g., forwardA, lateralA, horizA
  • Orientation quaternion used to transform device data into a vehicle-centric frame

These are used to detect:

  • Harsh braking/acceleration
  • Turning behaviour
  • Steering smoothness
  • Slalom/S-pattern maneuvers
  • Lane changes
  • Three-point turns
  • Stop/Start events

Examples in code:

  • TurnDetector processes yaw-rate peaks and cumulative turning angle.
  • LaneChangeDetector identifies sign-flipping yaw with lateral shove.
  • StopDetector identifies stop/start events using smoothed speed.
  • SlalomDetector identifies S-curve steering signatures.

3.2 Location & Heading Data

Collected via CLLocationManager:

  • GPS coordinates
  • Speed
  • Course (bearing)
  • True heading and heading accuracy
  • Timestamps for each fix

Examples in code:

  • LocationFix(speed, course, coordinate, timestamp)
  • HeadingSample(heading, accuracy)

This data powers route tracking, progress logs, and driving-pattern recognition.

3.3 Derived Telematics Events

DriversCoach may generate events such as:

  • Left/right turns with magnitude (deg/s)
  • Lane changes (left/right)
  • Slalom/S-pattern events with peak accelerations and timing separation
  • Stops and resumes (stopBegan / stopEnded)
  • Three-point turn detection (via ThreePointTurnDetector in your ViewModel)

These help generate feedback, scoring, and data-driven learning recommendations.

4. How We Use Your Information

We use your data to deliver the features of DriversCoach, StreetSmart, and YDLR services, including:

4.1 To Provide App Functionality

  • Navigation and driving-session tracking
  • Real-time tips
  • Driving-event detection
  • Session summaries, safety insights, and feedback
  • Cognitive assessment scoring (StreetSmart)

4.2 To Improve Driving Safety

We use anonymized and aggregated data to:

  • Improve our detection algorithms
  • Support research on driving behaviour
  • Improve training methods for new drivers

4.3 To Support Technical Operations

  • Crash diagnosis
  • Fraud prevention
  • System auditing and security
  • Performance monitoring

4.4 For Research (Non-Commercial)

StreetSmart and DriversCoach data may be used in research initiatives related to driver behaviour and safety trends.
All research data is:

  • Anonymized or de-identified
  • Aggregated
  • Not used for marketing without consent
  • Compliant with PIPEDA’s research exemptions

5. Legal Basis for Processing (Canada)

We process your information under:

  • Consent — provided when you sign up or enable telematics tracking
  • Contractual necessity — to provide StreetSmart and DriversCoach
